The Champ

Just a quick note to say many congratulations to Steven, our new MasterChef Goes Large champion 2007. Although I watched most of this week with a pang of envy, especially the Downing Street episode, as the week grew to a conclusion I knew that I was watching 3 outstanding cooks who blow me out of the water when it comes to MasterChef standard cuisine.

Even though I know these guys, have cooked alongside and laughed and cried with them, I watched tonight in amazement at some of the dishes they were producing. I can only hope and dream, and I am proud to say that I cooked in the same kitchen as them and at least tried to give them a run for their money. Well done Steven, Ben and Hannah, they are all champs in their own right and should be very very proud of their efforts, especially under such pressure and personal sacrifice. Congratulations my friends xxx

David, it's great to find your blog and to see some of your great recipes. My wife and I were gutted when you left because (and perhaps I shouldn't say this) we really wanted to see you go further than Ben. Keep up the good work!

Must have been gutting for you to watch the finals, and don't be too hard on yourself - had you survived the critics meal, I'm sure you'd have held your own. But then you didn't come across as the kind of guy who'd be happy serving up complicated dishes in expensive restaurants anyway, and I suspect that's actually something a lot of viewers liked about you (I loved your "sometimes I feel like I'm in a hairdressing competition" line). Look - you clearly have a gift for honest, tasty food, in decent portions (nowt to be ashamed of!), from recipes that are doable for ordinary folk. What you write on this blog about how you're bringing your daughter up is great. So take what you can from the Masterchef experience, and go forth and inspire the Geordie nation! (And I say this as someone who, being a long-time vegetarian, isn't actually going to try most of your recipes... though I'm glad to read further down your blog that you have some not-unkind words to say about us, too!)

from La Joconde:
It was a pleasure watching you cook your great recipes David, I nearly thought at one stage that I could "taste" the flavour when it was presented to the "judges". Very well done, remember it is not always winning that counts but the journey that it takes to achieving the best, and that you did.

Just wanted to say you were the real winner in my eyes - really inspired by your passion (and talent) for the best of British food.
